ヤハラヅカサ
Yaharazukasa
Yaharazukasa is a stone marker standing at the water's edge in Hyakuna, Tamagusuku, changing its appearance with the tides — said to be where Amamikiyo, the creator deity of Ryukyu, first came ashore, and a place of worship on the Agariumai pilgrimage route.

Yaharazukasa is a monument of Ryukyu limestone standing at the water's edge on the Hyakuna coast of Tamagusuku. At high tide it sinks beneath the sea; at low tide it reappears. It is a rare sacred site that shows or hides itself depending on when you visit. It is known as one of the places of prayer on the Agariumai pilgrimage route, which travels from Shuri to the sacred grounds of the east.
This spot is said to be where Amamikiyo, the creator deity of the Ryukyus, first set foot on the main island of Okinawa, arriving from Nirai Kanai beyond the sea by way of Kudaka Island. From here, the story goes, she continued on to Hamagawa-utaki, Minton Gusuku, and Tamagusuku Gusuku — a single narrative thread linking the sacred sites of the south. None of this is asserted as historical fact, but the place quietly conveys where the memory of this land was believed to begin.
It is best to time your visit to the tides. Depending on the water level, you may not be able to reach the monument, and the ground is easily wetted underfoot, so choose the hours around low tide. Since the tides change daily, check them before setting out. If you follow the farm road from the Mibaru Beach side, you will reach a dead-end turning area, but visitors are asked not to park there. Use the parking areas nearby and continue on foot.
Yaharazukasa is a place of prayer where offerings are still made today. Please do not touch the incense burner, and observe quietly. Standing before a stone that sinks into the sea and emerges again, you may find that time flows a little differently. This is less a place for a hurried photo than one for listening to the waves a while, in step with the tide and the light.
