Sefa-utaki is the first sacred site to know about in the southern part of Okinawa's main island. One of the properties that make up the UNESCO World Heritage listing "Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu," it was regarded throughout the kingdom era as the most prestigious utaki of all. Rock, forest, stone paving, incense burners, and the direction of the sea — this is a place where faith is bound not to ornate buildings but to nature itself. The official website is the definitive source of information on Sefa-utaki. For details, please check the official Sefa-utaki website.

Tracing its history, this was the ceremonial ground where the Oaraori investiture rites were held for the Kikoeokimi, the chief priestess who stood at the pinnacle of the kingdom's religious order. It was positioned as a site of national importance, supporting the centralized royal authority from the side of faith and spirit. As for its origins, it is said to be one of the utaki founded by Amamikiyo, the creator deity of the Ryukyus. History and legend are best received separately — and legend deserves to be handled quietly, as legend.

Allow time for walking when you visit. The ticket office and the entrance are some distance apart, and the paths within the utaki include stone paving and slopes, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Beyond the entrance to Sangui, access is restricted and not open to general visitors or worshippers. Closure days follow the lunar calendar and change every year. Because opening hours and closures can vary, always check the official Sefa-utaki website for the latest information before you set out.

Sefa-utaki remains a carefully protected place of prayer to this day. Please keep your voice low, avoid revealing clothing, and do not bring in — or take away — any plants, animals, or stones. Before taking a photograph, take a moment to remember that this is a place of prayer. Small acts of consideration, added together, keep a beautiful distance between visitors and this place.
