Hamagawa Utaki

Hamagawa Utaki is a sacred site on the cliff above the northern end of Hyakuna Beach, where Amamikiyo is said to have eased the fatigue of the journey with spring water after coming ashore — a place of worship on the Agariumai pilgrimage route.

Hamagawa Utaki

Hamagawa Utaki is a sacred site set on the clifftop north of Hyakuna Beach in Tamagusuku Hyakuna. The name "Hamagawa" refers to fresh water that wells up beside the sea. In a space wrapped in dappled sunlight and the murmur of flowing water stand a small altar, an incense burner, and the spring itself. It is one of the places of prayer along the Agariumai pilgrimage route, which links the sacred sites east of Shuri, and it is said that the kings of Ryukyu and Kikoeokimi, the realm's highest priestess, once worshipped here.

According to tradition, Amamikiyo, having come ashore at Yaharazukasa, soothed the weariness of her journey with the water of this spring, dwelt for a time in a nearby cave, and then moved inland to Minton Gusuku. This spring lies partway along a story of prayer that continues from the sea to the land. The legend is not stated as fact — please receive this as a place where the story has been handed down in that way.

Together with Yaharazukasa, it is well suited to tracing the path of prayer that connects sea and land. Stone steps lead down to the beach (in the direction of Yaharazukasa), but the footing can be slippery in places. No dedicated parking is provided, so please use parking areas nearby and take care not to park at the dead ends of farm roads. Wear comfortable walking shoes and take your time.

Hamagawa Utaki is a place of prayer where worship continues to this day. Incense burners are placed not only at the altar but also in hollows at the roots of the trees. Do not touch the offerings or stones, and visit quietly. Sheltered by water and shade, this is one of the most tranquil of Nanjo's sacred sites. Please keep in mind that it is a place of prayer, and spend your time here in quiet.
