Chinen Marine Leisure Center is a marine-leisure facility on the cape of the Chinen Peninsula. It is the one-stop base for enjoying the sea here: ferry boats to the uninhabited islands of Komaka and Ukabi offshore, plus glass-bottom boat rides, snorkeling, diving, and more. Board a boat and glide across crystal-clear water, and in about fifteen minutes you arrive at an uninhabited island.

Which island you can land on changes with the seasons: Komaka Island is generally open from April to November, Ukabi Island from December to March. Time on the islands is booked in set blocks, with extensions available. Life jackets are included in the boat fare, and everything is arranged so that first-timers can join with ease. From autumn through spring, there is also a sea-grape harvesting experience.

Reservations are required for the ferry boats. Depending on sea conditions, sailings may be canceled for safety. Same-day service is announced in the news section of the official website and elsewhere, so it is reassuring to check before you set out. For the latest fares and schedules, please also confirm with the official desk.

Time spent unhurried on an island of nothing but waves, sand, and sky is an experience unique to the seas of Nanjo. Resist the urge to overpack your itinerary — leave room in your trip to simply linger on an island.
